Pick your battles
Random: Had a conversation today about when the right time to push for the things you want at work... in this case tools. There is definitely a right and wrong time. In this case, some of the push-back is due to the many deadlines hanging over everyone's head... and then again some may be posturing. Requesting new tools to be installed/purchased/etc. during a period of stress at any level is futile. The best advice I could give was to get things done first and document the different times during the push that this new tool could have come in handy. After a "big win" or deployment, I'm not sure he'll have the same resistence to the tools he wants.

So where is Pogo?
I just remembered a while back AT&T was looking to get into the browser market with Pogo. Some of the features look interesting... but where is it?

Taking a look through Google Chrome's eyes
Google just released their new browser on the windows world... figured I'd give it a shot.
Have already found and reported a few minor issues... some javascript horking. In all, I dig the UI. Could maybe use a "manage bookmarks" feature. Maybe it's in here somewhere.
(NOTE: posting this from chrome right now... found another JS issue.)

You know you are getting old when
Just a few things that make me feel old sometimes... what does the same for you?
- someone's definition of "legacy code" includes something you wrote
- you know what "load *,8,1" means
- you remember when we used to call them "scripting languages"
- you simply can't continue to code after 2:30 AM
- you had a BBS handle
- this means something to you: "Hello everybody out there using minix -"
- these screens ring a bell? : http://toastytech.com/guis/guitimeline.html

XBOX 360 D-Link 624
So the power went out... again... this time I could not reload my router settings from config (checksum error!) So I had to google my way back to XBOX Live...
have to open
udp 88
udp/tcp 3074
udp 53
The last one is very important... if I don't have all the above opened up for XBOX, my dlink router will actually reboot during xbox live tests (and fail of course.)
Back to fun.

Trying new setup…
So I heard about NginX and figured I'd give it a try. The setup for NginX (pronouced engine X) was a breeze. I have a few Mongrels running behind it and things seem to be going pretty well at the moment. I still would soo much like to see a nice packaged server solution for Rails running in a multi-threaded environment. YARV, hurry up! :)

The right place at the right time…
I had to replace the glass in one of my patio doors so I went up to Home Depot like any other average "think I'm a handy man" joe would do to try to buy a replacement. They don't carry replacement panes in stock, of course, so I had to order one which would run me approx. $96 dollars and would not come in for another 6 to 10 biz days.
We put up with the broken glass patiently awaiting the arrival of the replacement which eventually came in. I get the glass home, removed the broken piece and begin to lift the replacement into place... you can see it coming can't you... it didn't fit!!! It was too big! I was extremely upset to say the least. I took the "no good to me" glass pane back to Home Depot where I argued with the service department about who's fault it was and finally got my money back.
I decide to try my luck with Lowes which is farther from my house. I mentioned the situation to folks at the door department and asked what my options are... he replied "could be very good". Apparently someone had ordered a replacement pane for their patio door but had ordered the wrong size as well. I walked out of there with the replacement for $20!!!
I wonder if the person who's glass I got went to Home Depot and bought the pane I ordered... nice way to save some money! :)
